Method for Judging the Directional Control Performance of Excavator Valves

How to Determine the Directional Control Performance of Excavator Control Valves

Assessing Valve Response Time and Smoothness

Response Time Measurement

The response time of an excavator control valve is a critical indicator of its directional control performance. To measure this, a high-speed data acquisition system can be employed. Connect pressure sensors at the inlet and outlet of the valve to monitor the pressure changes during the valve’s switching process. Start the hydraulic pump and operate the control lever to initiate the valve’s switching. Record the time interval from the moment the control signal is sent until the pressure at the outlet reaches a stable value corresponding to the new flow path. This time interval represents the valve’s response time. A shorter response time indicates better directional control performance, as it allows for quicker adjustments of the hydraulic flow to the actuators, enabling more precise and responsive operation of the excavator.

Smoothness Evaluation

Smooth valve operation is essential for preventing shocks and vibrations in the hydraulic system, which can affect the overall stability and durability of the excavator. During the valve switching process, observe the pressure fluctuations recorded by the pressure sensors. Excessive pressure spikes or drops indicate rough valve operation. Additionally, listen for any abnormal noises during the switching process, such as knocking or hissing sounds, which may also suggest issues with valve smoothness. A well – performing valve should exhibit minimal pressure fluctuations and operate quietly, ensuring a stable hydraulic flow to the actuators.

Checking Valve Sealing and Leakage

Internal Leakage Detection

Internal leakage within the control valve can lead to a reduction in system efficiency and inaccurate control of the hydraulic flow. To detect internal leakage, perform a static sealing test. Close all the ports of the valve except the inlet port and connect it to a hydraulic pressure source. Apply a specified test pressure, typically around 1.5 times the normal working pressure of the valve, and maintain it for a certain period, usually 10 – 15 minutes. Use a flow meter to measure the flow rate at the inlet port during this time. If there is a significant flow rate, it indicates internal leakage within the valve. The acceptable internal leakage rate varies depending on the valve type and specifications, but generally, it should be within a few milliliters per minute.

External Leakage Inspection

External leakage is not only a waste of hydraulic fluid but can also pose safety hazards and contaminate the working environment. Visually inspect all the connections and seals on the valve body for any signs of oil leakage, such as oil stains or drips. Pay close attention to areas around the valve ports, bolts, and joints. Use a piece of clean paper or cloth to wipe the suspected areas and check for the presence of oil. If external leakage is detected, it may be due to damaged seals, loose connections, or cracks in the valve body. Tighten the loose connections and replace the damaged seals to resolve the issue.

Verifying Valve Position Accuracy and Repeatability

Position Accuracy Verification

The accuracy of the valve’s position is crucial for precise control of the hydraulic flow to the excavator’s actuators. To verify position accuracy, install linear displacement sensors on the valve spool or use position – sensing valves if available. Operate the control lever to move the valve to different positions and record the actual positions indicated by the sensors. Compare these actual positions with the desired positions set by the control system. The deviation between the actual and desired positions should be within an acceptable range, typically within a few tenths of a millimeter for high – precision applications. A large deviation may indicate issues with the valve’s mechanical components, such as worn spools or guides, or problems with the control signal transmission.

Repeatability Assessment

Repeatability refers to the valve’s ability to consistently reach the same position under the same operating conditions. To assess repeatability, perform multiple switching operations of the valve to the same position. Record the actual positions reached during each operation using the linear displacement sensors. Calculate the standard deviation of these positions. A low standard deviation indicates high repeatability, meaning the valve can reliably reach the desired position time after time. High repeatability is essential for ensuring consistent performance of the excavator, especially in applications that require precise and repetitive movements, such as digging and grading.
