Method for inspecting the wear of the valve body of the excavator control valve
Excavator control valve body wear often develops slowly over thousands of operating hours, and early signs are easy to miss during basic routine checks. Even minor wear on internal bores and sealing surfaces can cause hidden internal leakage, reduced system efficiency, and gradual loss of control precision that only becomes obvious when the excavator starts showing noticeable performance issues.
Initial Operational Symptom Screening
Start by running every hydraulic function through its full range of motion under both no-load and partial working load conditions, paying close attention to any delayed response, unexpected drift, or inconsistent movement speed that does not match normal operating behavior. Monitor system pressure readings across different working states to spot any unprompted pressure drop that cannot be traced back to pump or seal issues, as this often points to uneven wear inside the valve body’s internal flow passages. Note any unusual rise in hydraulic oil operating temperature during extended work cycles, since excess internal leakage caused by worn valve bores generates extra heat that pushes oil temperatures far above normal stable levels.
Dimensional and Surface Inspection Process
Carefully disassemble the target valve section following the exact layout you marked during teardown, taking extra care not to scratch any polished internal bore surfaces while removing spools and internal components. Use precision measuring tools to check the inner diameter of each valve bore at multiple points along its full length, comparing the collected measurements against original design tolerances to identify uneven expansion, taper wear, or out-of-round deformation. Run a clean, lint-free cloth along all internal bore surfaces and sealing faces to feel for any rough spots, grooves, or worn ridges that signal material loss from years of spool movement and contaminant abrasion. Inspect all flow passages and port inner walls under bright, direct light to look for erosion marks, cavitation pitting, or scuffing that forms when high-velocity oil carries hard particles across metal surfaces over long operation hours.
Functional Leakage Verification
Reinstall the cleaned original spool into its corresponding valve bore, then move the spool through its full stroke several times to feel for any uneven resistance, sticking points, or unexpected play that was not present when the part was new. Block all external work ports on the tested valve section, then apply regulated test pressure to the inlet side and measure the volume of oil that leaks across the spool and out of the return port over a set period of time. Compare the measured leakage rate against the acceptable performance limits, as excessive cross-leakage between flow chambers is one of the clearest confirmations that the valve body has worn past its usable service condition. After completing the test, inspect all removed parts for fine metallic debris that was not present during previous service checks, as this fresh metal residue confirms active ongoing wear inside the valve body that will continue to worsen with further use.
