When a specific section of an LED display stays dark while the rest of the screen works normally, the problem is localized to that area’s power, data, or hardware. Targeted troubleshooting can often restore function without replacing major components.
Determine the Fault Pattern for Quick Diagnosis
First, observe the exact shape and location of the dark area. Is it a perfect rectangle matching a single module or a group of modules? This points to a module or power supply issue. Is it a vertical or horizontal line/column? This strongly suggests a problem with the data transmission path (a specific row or column driver). Is it a random, irregular cluster of dark pixels? This typically indicates individual LED failures or a localized issue on the module’s circuit board. Identifying this pattern is the fastest way to narrow down the faulty component.
Check the Dedicated Power Connection for the Dark Section
If a whole module or a block of modules is dark, their dedicated power supply or connection is the prime suspect. Locate the power supply unit that feeds the affected area. Check if its indicator light is on. If it’s off, check its input power cable and fuse. If the light is on, use a multimeter to measure its output voltage at the terminal connecting to the dark modules. The voltage should be stable and within the specified range (e.g., 5V ±0.2V). A low or zero reading means the power supply is faulty. Also, inspect the power distribution cables from this supply to the modules for any loose connections, breaks, or burn marks.
Reseat Data Cables and Test Signal Flow
For a dark vertical column or a row, the issue is likely in the data chain. The signal travels sequentially from one module to the next via ribbon cables or data cables. Turn off the power and locate the cable connecting the last working module to the first dark module in the row/column. Carefully unplug and replug this cable at both ends, ensuring it’s seated straight and firmly. If the problem persists, try swapping this cable with a known-good one from a working section of the display. If the dark area moves, you’ve found a faulty cable. If it stays in the same place, the problem is on the module’s input driver chip.
Swap Modules to Isolate the Fault
For a dark single module, the most definitive test is module swapping. After ensuring power and data cables to the module are secure, turn off the display. Carefully remove the suspected faulty module and swap its position with an identical, known-good module from a working area of the screen. Reconnect all cables and power on the display. If the dark spot moves to the location of the good module, then the original module is confirmed faulty and needs repair or replacement. If the dark spot remains in the original location, the problem is not the module itself, but something in the power or data path specific to that physical location on the display’s mounting structure.
